Darren Evans was another guy that really stood out today at the Hokie Kids Club event at Lane Stadium. I’m sure it has something to do with the fact he has a little boy of his own, but he was great with the kids. My boy had a great time today!

My boy with Virginia Tech’s Ryan Williams. What a class act! He was great with all the kids - smiles and sincere appreciation for each little Hokie fan who lined up for his autograph and a photo. The Hokies couldn’t ask for a better ambassador. The rushing and touchdown records don’t hurt either. Or so I’m told.

I was on campus today with Albert for a video/photo shoot and we decided to stick around the Drill Field to get some photos of students during class changes to use in future photo slide shows or Web features. I took more than 200 pictures and then pulled out about 10 of my favorites.
This photo is of a student who obviously is a member of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. We do a lot of video work in our department, but not a lot of photography, because the university has a brilliant photography staff. However, we are broadening our horizons and it’s nice to be able to go out and take some quick photos to help us tell the awe-inspiring stories about Virginia Tech and how we’re making a difference in today’s world.

I took this one, too.

Here’s another favorite from today’s Drill Field photo shoot. Albert and I talked about how almost every other student seemed to be wearing Virginia Tech Hokies colors or some other variation of Tech clothing. Tech students really do seem to love their school. Go Hokies!

For those that don’t know, I have been covering the Hokies since 1995 for print, radio, TV and on the Web. Tonight, KTIK in Boise, Idaho, had me on their afternoon show, Idaho Sports Talk with Caves and Prater, to talk about the Hokies vs. Broncos matchup on Sept. 6.

Move-in for the fall 2010 semester begins on Wednesday, Aug. 18, but some students have already begun the pilgrimage back to Blacksburg. When they make their way to the Duck Pond side of the Drill Field, they’ll find the 2010 Solar Decathlon Europe championship set up for display.

For those that may have missed the news, Virginia Tech architecture and engineering students took first place overall in the 2010 Solar Decathlon Europe competition with their entry, Lumenhaus.

Josh Franklin, a second-year grad student studying landscape architecture, and Daniel Beck, a third-year grad student studying architecture, were out in the heat and humidity today (Aug. 12, 2010) working on reassembling the highly portable solar-powered home.

Lumenhaus will be on display with public tours through October, at which point it may be on its way back to New York, or to Chicago, according to Josh. The house will be completed, with some improvements, on Monday, Aug. 16, in plenty of time for students and their parents who will be coming back next week for move-in.

Are you going to stop by take a tour?

My son on the practice green for the first time. It was his first ever trip to a golf course and the first time he’s putted on a real green.
Today was the Roanoke Valley Chapter of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association annual charity golf tournament. The event raises money for rising Virginia Tech freshmen who live in the Roanoke Valley. Follow the Roanoke Chapter on Twitter and Facebook.

I think we’ve got a cakewalk through the year. All we need to worry about is Miami and Boise State. We’ve had a bad history of losing the big games to open the season though the past couple years.

39 days and counting! I love how Boise State players say they are going to crush us. Yeah, we’ll see about that.

Virginia Tech’s orientation leaders do the whirlybird dance one last time as today is the last day of orientation. Here it is in its entirety!

Have you seen the Virginia Tech orientation leaders do the “whirlybird” dance at Squires in the morning? If you haven’t, here’s a sneak peak courtesy of the video production crew over in the media building. A more complete video is in the works, but until then, get your “whirlybird” on!

Also, your last chance to see them do the dance live is tomorrow, Thursday, July 22, around 10 a.m. Don’t miss it!
