Me, Her, the Boy and a Dog

The adventures of me, her, my boy and our dog as we navigate life in a crazy world. We love the outdoors, sports, reading, playing, and of course, the Virginia Tech Hokies and the William & Mary Tribe.

Also, I founded the GoFightWinVT Tumblr, so if you're a Hokie, give it a follow. And, feel free to check out my Project 365 Tumblr.

Here’s the article I wrote about the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets for VT News. Let me know what you think.

Today I walked more than five miles all over campus taking photos of move-in day. During my trek, I gave directions, offered to carry a few things, and even took a picture of a Hokie family with their camera. It was one of the best days I’ve ever had at this job because I absolutely love my alma mater.

It was 18 years ago this week that I arrived on campus - which looked very different back then - and I even stopped by Thomas Hall to see my very first dorm room. Thomas Hall, on the upper quad, is now home to the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and the Highty Tighties - the corps’ marching band.

While on the UQ, I saw older cadets drilling the new cadets as part of Cadre Week. I took a ton of photos, but this one really jumped out at me. This female cadet is instructing newbies on how to properly drill with a rifle (non-functioning of course). Her eyes are so striking and focused on examining the young cadet’s posture and technique.

I didn’t interrupt to get her name, but she is with the 2nd battalion, or so says her t-shirt and that of her fellow upperclassmen. Short story long, I love this photo. You can see more on our Facebook page.

I was on campus today with Albert for a video/photo shoot and we decided to stick around the Drill Field to get some photos of students during class changes to use in future photo slide shows or Web features. I took more than 200 pictures and then pulled out about 10 of my favorites.

This photo is of a student who obviously is a member of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. We do a lot of video work in our department, but not a lot of photography, because the university has a brilliant photography staff. However, we are broadening our horizons and it’s nice to be able to go out and take some quick photos to help us tell the awe-inspiring stories about Virginia Tech and how we’re making a difference in today’s world.

I took this one, too.

Having grown up in a military family, I have always had a deep appreciation and respect for the men and women who serve in our nation’s armed forces. My grandfather fought in Vietnam; dad served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force; mom was a career civil servant; my brother served in the U.S. Navy; and my cousin served in the U.S. Army, just to name a few.

My best friend from high school graduated from Virginia Tech, is an alumnus of the corps of cadets, and has made a career as an officer in the Army. He recently returned home to his wife and two sons from a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

On Friday, April 10, Virginia Tech added another name to the Pylons at the War Memorial. U.S. Marine Corps Capt. David Seth Mitchell, a 2001 graduate, was killed last October while supporting combat operations in Afghanistan. The video above contains photos taken from the memorial ceremony held in his honor on Friday, April 10. May he rest in peace.
