Who I Follow

My New BikeSo I got my new bike today and decided to ride it to my office to see how long it would take. It took entirely too long with all of the traffic lights. It’s only five miles, but it took me nearly 30 minutes. It takes 15 minutes in the car. By the time I got to the office, I was completely exhausted from climbing the Mount Everest-sized hills. It also didn’t help that it was about 93 degrees outside.

The bike is great! The idiot riding the bike wasn’t sure he’d be able to complete the five-mile trek home. But, after a 10-minute rest outside the office, he got back on and headed home. The return trip also took 30 minutes and though the mind was willing, the body was unable to climb the last big hill, or as I call it, Mt. Kilimanjaro.

I rode the final .8 miles back to the house and as I walked through the door, it was as though the bones had been mysteriously removed from my legs. I leaned the bike up against the couch, took off my shirt, grabbed a water and a glass of orange juice and collapsed on the couch and promptly fell asleep.

The saying is true about “just like riding a bike,” however, while it is easy enough to sit on an uncomfortable seat and push the pedals to make the bike move forward in a straight line, it still requires a different level of physical fitness … a level I clearly have not obtained.

My new goal is to be able to climb that last hill without having to walk the bike up it. I think I can, I think I can, I think I can…
